This pack consists of a painted canvas body fitted over a wooden frame and tacked in place. The body of the pack meas. approx. 14.50 inches long x 12.00 inches tall x 3.25 inches wide.

The outer flap is edged in leather painted white while the flap itself is black painted canvas to match the body. Attached to the bottom of this flap is a rectangular piece of leather that meas. approx. 14.50 inches long x 2.50 inches tall. At center of the flap are gold crossed cannons that meas. approx. 5.25 inches long x 3.00 inches wide. Above the artillery insignia is a stylized “WA” in gold paint. These letters are approx. 2.75 inches high and with the script decoration cover a total area of approx. 5.00 inches in width. Below the artillery insignia is the number “52” done in gold paint. These numbers are approx. 1.25 inches high x 1.00 inch wide each.

Upon lifting the outer flap there are two thin inner flaps of painted canvas that cover the single interior compartment. Each of these flaps has two grommets where string ties would be used to hold the flaps closed. Only one string tie is present.

The back of the pack still has the two shoulder straps. These are anchored to the pack by two screws on each and one copper rivet on each. The straps meas. approx. 1.00 inch wide and are approx. 28.00 inches long. One strap anchored to a buckle that is still attached to the bottom of the pack while the other strap has an adjuster buckle that attached to a now missing strap sewn to the bottom of the pack.

The outer flap was held closed by two leather straps that are still present although only one looks to be full-length. These are 1.00 inch wide and the full-length strap meas. approx. 25.00 inches long from where it anchors on the top back of the pack and the shorter one meas. approx. 17.00 inches long. Still attached to the top of the pack are two leather anchors for a blanket roll.

The overall condition of the item is good. The painted insignia is about 95% intact with the body showing some minor separations on edges. There is one 3-cornered tear on the lower back. The tear meas. about 1.75 x 2.00. The leather straps are weak but still tightly attached to the pack. The surfaces are very dirty throughout. The body is surprisingly strong. In its day this was a well-made pack.
