The 1849 Colt pocket revolver was immensely popular as a lightweight sidearm among officers. This is a non-regulation style holster that could have been used by early westerners as well, but has a distinctly military style with a full flap that extends into a long billet secured about halfway down the body by a cross strap. This same style of holster was made for larger frame revolvers like Colt Navies as well and is seen in period photographs. Set up to be carried with the butt to the rear, a few non-regulation holsters like this are even seen carried on the left side by Civil War officers in period photos. The finish is very good, with some crackling or waviness at flex points, mostly on the flap, but very little flaking. The single rectangular belt loop is in place on the reverse, tightly attached with stitching only and no rivets. The identical holster for a Navy revolver is illustrated in Meadows (1987,) page 71.
