The Model 1916 holster for the Colt 1911 automatic replaced the old 1912 patterns that held the pistol too low on the leg for most soldiers. The firm of Graton and Knight made them both in WW1 and WW2, though in the first period they used only “G&K” as a mark. This one has the full firm name “Graton & Knight Co.” under a “U.S.” on the reverse. These are often found with a 1943 date. This one is undated, but is certainly WW2 production. The medium brown russet leather is excellent. The area covered by the flap when closed shows it was originally a somewhat darker brown that has lightened somewhat. All stitching and seams are tight. The leg thong is coiled and present. Some slight verdigris on the rivets on the reverse should be wiped off. The overall finish is super, with just a couple of scuffs. The oval and US on the flap is crisp, as is the maker’s stamp. [SR]
