The Colt 1855 Root revolver is an elegant side-hammer revolver that shows up in .28 and .31 calibers. We don’t see many belt holsters for them. This is a nice example in black leather that has a definite military feel to it, with a full flap and with both the belt loop and long English-style latch tab secured by rivets. The butt-to-the-rear configuration is common in non-regulation military and general commercially produced holsters. Non-regulation holsters are frequently seen on the belts of officers, who had to purchase their own gear and liked lighter weight pistols, and among early war volunteers who sometimes arrived in camp with sidearms presented by family and admirers at home. In this case, the long latch tab that comes up from the rear of the holster to fasten to a stud on the flap was thought to better retain the pistol in the holster, which was also made with an open toe. The finish shows just some old crackling, crazing, and small areas of old finish loss underneath layers of polish, and is a very good example of a scarce holster for a Colt.  [sr]
