1903 FLAP HOLSTER FOR .38 CALIBER REVOLVER – STATE OF COLORADO

$95.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 2020-59

This is a black leather holster made to accommodate a .38 caliber double-action revolver.

The holster “pocket” measures 10” along its front edge. Holster is made of black bridle leather. The flap and belt loop pieces sewn and riveted to the back. The closing tab is an extension of the flap. The finial hole has a ¼” long split on one side but this portion of the flap remains overall sturdy. The associated brass finial also remains tightly attached. Embossed “US” within an oval appears of the face.

Belt loop is approximately 3 ½” wide and is attached by three rivets and a line of stitching. The leather plug that originally closed the end of the holster is gone. Most of this style of holster were made at the Rock Island Arsenal but there is no maker’s stamp on this. Instead, the date “1903” is faintly visible on the flap as are inspector’s initials (fainter still) at the end of the flap. Two ¾” slits in back for tie-down strap.

Inside of flap is deeply stamped “COLO. / D / 2”. Many of these holsters are known to have been manufactured for state militias. After Colorado attained statehood in 1876, the then Colorado State Militia was occasionally activated to participate in actions in the American Indian Wars and to deal with striking miners. There was a 1st Colorado Infantry Regiment and 2nd Colorado Infantry Regiment formed in the state until the Militia Act of 1903 reorganized the state units and established the modern National Guard system.

In overall very good “used” condition.  [jet]
