This white china plate meas. approx. 8.25 inches across and has a painted gold-leaf border on a raised edge. At center is a bust in profile of Union Major General Winfield Scott Hancock. The General is shown in civilian clothes and as a heavier, older man. Beneath his portrait is printed “FOR PRESIDENT/ WINFIELD S. HANCOCK.”
The General’s wartime career is well known in Civil War circles and need not be repeated here. What may not be known is that Hancock received the nomination of the Democratic Party to run against Republican James A. Garfield in the 1880 Presidential election.
The plate is in good condition with a crazed surface beneath the top glaze. The reverse has a faint maker’s mark. There are no chips or cracks and only one small area at the 9 o’clock position where the gold-leaf border is a little thin.
