A classic outer garment from the mid-19th century. Lightweight black silk taffeta lined in brown glazed cotton.  Shaping achieved with curved seams over the shoulders; the seams have very tiny piping to add strength and prevent stretching.  The center front edges and round neckline are accented with passementerie braid trimming. 3" wide black lace edging finishes the bottom of the mantle and covers the slits for the arms.  There are no closures.
