LEATHER WALLET WITH 1863 FIVE DOLLAR NOTE & 1866 TWENTY-FIVE CENT NOTE

This is a machine-made Civil War era leather wallet as carried by numerous civilians and soldiers of the time. The folding wallet measures 12 ¾” long x 4 ¾” high and is made of pasteboard covered with a thin veneer of smooth, fine leather.  Exterior leather is a light tan color while the interior is of blue, red and light tan leather.

Wallet unfolds to reveal a multi-fold, open compartment and an inner pocket with flap. There are two flaps to hold currency and these fold up with a small flap and tab to secure. Inner front fold has a 4 ½” leather tab sewn which wraps around exterior and slides into a tab to secure. Leather exhibits light edge tooling front and back and is lightly scuffed.

Inside of wallet two pieces of U.S. currency were present. One is an 1863 five dollar note featuring an image of Alexander Hamilton and of a statue of a woman holding a sword, measuring 7 ½” x 3”. The second is an 1866 twenty-five cent note which has an image of Robert J. Walker, Secretary of the Treasury 1845, measuring 3 ½” x 2”.   [sm]
