Song broadsheet & music. By Finley Johnson; Published by Oliver Ditson & Co.: Boston, Ma., 1862. 6 printed pages, measuring 13 x 10”.
Finley Johnson’s rendition is the union reply to the earlier Confederate version. Consisting of six verses, the first one makes derogatory reference to Lee’s ragged army during its 1862 invasion that culminated in the Battle of Antietam.
1st Verse:
“The liberating army came, Maryland, my Maryland
Polluting thy soil in freedom’s name, Maryland, my Maryland!
They came with proclamations loud
They came with ragged, squalid crowd
To wrap three in secession’s shroud
Maryland, my Maryland!
2nd Verse:
They marched along in bold array, Maryland, my Maryland
Expecting on thy soil to say, Maryland, my Maryland!
They with bugle, and with drum
They came from Hades, the very scum
To strike the sons of freedom dumb
Maryland, my Maryland!”
The sheets exhibits light chipping along left margin, and slight soiling, with one neat 1” inch taped repair on third page margin. Else VG, and attractive.
