Songsheet, “words & music by Geo. F. Root.” Published by Root & Cady, Chicago, IL, 1864. 4 printed pages, measuring 13 x 10”. Root was a notable Civil War era songwriter, whose work included not only this famous and popular song, but also “The Battle Cry of Freedom” and “Just Before the Battle, Mother”. Consisting of three verses and a chorus.
1st Verse:
“In the prison cell I sit, thinking mother dear, of you
And our bright and happy home so far away.
And the tears they fill my eyes spite of all that I can do
Though I try to cheer my comrades and be gay.
Chorus:
Tramp, tramp, tramp, the boys are marching,
Cheer up comrades they will come
And beneath the starry flag We shall breathe the air again
Of the freeland in our own beloved home.”
The song sheet is lightly and neatly taped in three 1” segments along the right margin; against light card backing. Exhibits slight traces foxing & soiling. Else VG, and attractive.
