This Civil War hardtack cracker meas. approx. 3.00 inches wide x 3.00 inches long x 0.50 an inch thick with four rows of five holes each. There is one corner that is chipped but otherwise the cracker is in very good condition with no cracks.
With the item is a piece of old lined paper that was once wrapped around the cracker. On the paper is a period pencil inscription that reads “THIS WAS BROUGHT FROM SUFFOLK BY THE DRAFTED MEN IN 1863.”
The Siege of Suffolk, Virginia took place from April 11 to May 4, 1863 when Confederate General James Longstreet, detached from Lee’s main army in Virginia, unsuccessfully attempted to capture the city from Union forces under Major General John Peck.
