This stocking style cap is made of four pieces of red cotton cloth gathered at the top. Laid flat the cap meas. approx. 16.00 inches long x 10.00 inches wide. Around the base of the cap are three parallel rows of black cloth tape spaced approx. 0.25 inch apart. The apex of the cap has an attached knot of the same red cloth as the body and has been cut into numerous tassels.
All the seams on the cap are tightly closed. The body has some scattered fading and the black tape has several areas of wear and minor separations otherwise the exterior is in excellent condition.
The interior is plain and unlined except for the very bottom where a white cotton sweatband was sewn in. This sweatband though now badly worn, is still approx. 85% intact.
Caps made on this same pattern and decorations are known to have been used by Maine units during the Civil War, especially the 5th.
