This roll up Brook’s patent case doubles as a writing desk and a housewife. At the base is a japanned tin tube approx. 8.50 inches long. The tube is hollow inside and has a strip of painted canvas approx. 11.00 inches long by 8.50 inches wide attached to it. The tin base can be rolled up inside this canvas piece for closing. When open the hollow center of the tin holds a rosewood barrel inkwell and a double spool of black & white thread. This area is also meant for pens and erasers but none are present. The end of the tin opposite the inkwell has a small compartment with lid. In this compartment now are two bone buttons and some loose wool thread.

The interior of the canvas flap has two pockets. One is lined with a printed cloth with a typical Victorian pattern and the other is lined with more painted or japanned canvas. The lower of the two pockets contains a FOUGERA’S READY MADE MUSTARD PLASTER and a pack of 1863 dated needles. Above the lower pocket is a strip of stiff cardboard covered with japanned canvas. This was meant to use as a hard writing surface. The canvas has separated some from the cardboard. The cardboard face has a paper label that reads “BROOK’S MILITARY WRITING FOLIO AND WORK CASE COMBINED..” below this heading is a long testimonial to the usefulness of the item.

Also attached to the tin tube is a piece of cloth approx. 9.00 inches long x 5.75 inches wide. One side of the cloth bears the same Victorian design mentioned earlier while the other side is covered in japanned canvas with slots for holding razors, pens etc… Present in this section is one straight razor, one ink pen and another miscellaneous tool.

This rare item is in very good condition and shows only light signs of wear from use.
