Fine, early pewter, box-like inkstand with two pull-out drawers together with a top cover that has a hinged cop lid. Possibly of English or Scottish manufacture the square shaped inkstand measures 3” high x 2 7/8” wide x 2 7/8” deep. It rests atop a 3½” square pewter base. Pewter top lifts up and exposes a 2 7/8” square 1” deep box that holds the ink. Top is fitted with the hinged lid and four dip holes for quill pens, one in each corner. Both slide out drawers, one for a sander and one for ink wafers, have a pewter pull knob. Bottom base bears hallmarks or touchmarks that include a ‘crowned X, two stamped cocks and a small rectangle marked with the small letter ‘C’.
An original pewter, two-drawer inkstand that is a fine example of an early 19th century writing accoutrement.
