Wet plate albumen. The oval image is 5.25” by 7.5” on a mount that measures at least 7” by 10”. The image is framed, and we have not removed it from its frame. Frame measures 14” x 17”.
The general is seated in uniform with a hat in his lap, sword at his side, and his hand on the grip of his cavalry sabre. The sleeve braid, button, and sword hilt are tinted yellow or gold. The photo has a printed gold bolder with “Photographed by Vannerson & Co”. Pasted below the image in a clipped signature reads “Yours to count on J.E.B. Stuart”.
The image has remarkable clarity and detail especially in his beard and face. Some light foxing and staining on the mount. A small crease runs across the image bottom.
We have not seen for sale another image this size of Stuart. Extremely rare!
