Photo is a waist-up sitting view of William W. Hemenway of the 18th Massachusetts Infantry. He is wearing a coat with brass buttons and forage cap with infantry horn insignia that has an “18” in the center. His hands are folded in his lap. Image has lightly yellowed with age but is clear with very good contrast.
Oval wooden frame measures 9 ¾” x 11 ¾”. Shows a few scattered small nicks, but overall good condition. Wire is mounted on reverse for hanging.
William W. Hemenway is listed as a 24 year old clerk when he enlisted as a Sergeant on May 20, 1864. He was mustered into Co. “I”, 18th Massachusetts Infantry on May 24, 1861. He was mustered out on September 2, 1864 at Readville, Massachusetts. He is listed as wounded on August 30, 1862 at 2nd Bull Run, Virginia, on December 13, 1862 at Fredericksburg, Virginia and again on May 5, 1864 at the Wilderness in Virginia. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on July 31, 1862, to 1st Lieutenant on February 25, 1863, and to Captain on June 4, 1864. [sm]
