Item Code: 830-01

Standard Civil War period album with a wonderful raised shield embossed with crossed US flags done in gold and black at center. Above the flags are a wreath of oak leaves. Both the front and back covers have this decoration and it is in excellent condition on both sides. The spine also has a wonderful raised geometric design outlined in gold with “PHOTOGRAPHS” at center. The overall condition of the leather on the covers is outstanding with just a little bit of surface rubbing.

The album is held closed by two brass latches with faux buckles. The brass surfaces show a little dirt from age and storage but otherwise they are in nice shape.

The interior of the album has a front signature that is separating. It is holding by a 2.00 inch wide lattice at center. The back signature is in the same condition with the rearmost blank page loose. All other pages are bound well. The front has the usual title page and index. Index is blank and some child has scribbled on it in pencil.

The album holds 50 images and it is full. Of the 50 images only 4 appear to be post-war images. All the rest are wartime or just before. The album starts with an often seen image of President Washington embracing President Lincoln as he enters Heaven. Mr. Washington is also bestowing a laurel wreath on Mr. Lincoln’s head. The album ends with a Lincoln assassination card as well. This card shows Columbia in grief sitting beside the catafalque that holds President Lincoln’s coffin under an arch with a grieving soldier and sailor on each side. Below this is printed the text of President Lincoln’s farewell address to the people of Springfield, Illinois when he left to take office in 1861.

The other images in the album are 26 full standing views and 22 are seated or bust views. Some of the nicer images are as follows:

-Full view CDV of a man and two seated women. The women each wear a wonderful bonnet with large bows under the chin.

-Full seated view of a husband and wife looking at an album

-Full standing view of a man in a dark suit playing a large “backfire” military style brass horn.

-Image of a man crouching on the ground wearing an unusual soft hat turning what looks to be a small grist wheel.

The majority of the rest of the images show woman in nice dresses with various types of decorations, gloves and a few hats.

The soldier images in the album are as follows:

-        Full standing view of Lt. William H. Baugher. He is posed leaning against a column with his legs crossed and one hand thrust in his coat a la Napoleon. He wears a dark single-breasted frock coat with officer’s shoulder straps and matching dark trousers. Image has a period pencil inscription along the bottom of the mount that reads “LIEUT. W. H. BAUGHER.” Image is clear and clean with great contrast. The reverse of the image has a photographer’s imprint for C. L. LOCHMAN, CARLISLE, PA.

William H. Baugher resided in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania and was a 22 year old Carpenter when he enlisted as a Private in Company I, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry at Centerville, Pennsylvania on September 19, 1861. He is described as being 5’10” tall with dark complexion, blue eyes and dark hair. He was quickly promoted to Sergeant and rose to 2nd Lieutenant in Co. B on May 31, 1863 and 1st Lieutenant a year later. He was mustered out at Lexington, North Carolina on July 18, 1865.

-        Full standing image of Private William B. Duncan. He is posed almost exactly like the image of Lt. Baugher described above except Duncan’s hand is not stuffed in his jacket. The photographer’s imprint is the same as that on Lt. Baugher’s image. Private Duncan wears a dark shell jacket open to reveal a matching military vest and matching dark trousers. The image is clear and clean. In addition to the photographer’s imprint the reverse also has a period pencil inscription that reads “WM. DUNCAN. DICKINSON, CUM. CO. PA.”

William B. Duncan was residing in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania when he enlisted as a Private in Company I, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry on November 9, 1861. He was promoted Corporal on April 30, 1864 and was wounded in action at Waynesboro, Georgia on December 4, 1864. He was mustered out at Lexington, North Carolina on July, 18, 1865.

-        The last military image is a full standing unidentified view of a soldier and friend. The soldier wears a dark shell jacket with Sergeants chevrons, a light military vest and light trousers with a dark NCO leg stripe. At first glance the soldier’s companion appears to be a civilian but upon closer inspection this man is wearing what looks to be a long commercial four-button sack coat with a barely visible dark vest underneath and light trousers with a dark leg stripe. He may be a soldier as well. The image is clear and clean with great contrast. The reverse has a photographer’s imprint of GEO. M. BRETZ, NEWVILLE, PENNA.

The last military image is a bust view of a young man in civilian clothes. The bottom of the mount is inscribed in period pencil “L (S?) P. BERRY C V I.” The name can also be BERY or BARY. The “CVI” may be for Connecticut Volunteer Infantry but research failed to turn up possible soldiers.

The 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry served in the Armies of Ohio and Cumberland and in the Department of Mississippi. It saw action in Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. It was involved in 72 battles and skirmishes losing 8 Officers and 221 enlisted men killed, died of wounds and disease.

Some of the pages of the album are dirty or have light foxing but there is nothing to seriously detract from the quality of the album or the images it contains.
