CDV album features civilian images of two Union soldiers in civilian clothing. Abial Lewis was born on Jan. 19, 1842. He was a resident of Bradford County, Pennsylvania. He enlisted on March 24, 1864 as a Private and was mustered into Co. “G”, 50th Pennsylvania Infantry. He transferred out on June 19, 1865 into Veteran Reserve Corps. Date of discharge is unknown. He died on Aug. 13, 1909 (aged 67) and is buried in Wyalusing Cemetery in Wyalusing, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.

Julius Tyler of Ararat (image #38 in the album) was born on Oct. 23, 1832. He married Ellen Clarissa Fletcher, of Pleasant Mount, PA, born April 18, 1843, daughter of Charles C. and Matilda (Squire) Fletcher; in 1856 he went to Illinois, and spent a winter teaching, then went to Pawnee Co., Nebraska Ter.; was clerk of that county for two years; in 1860 was in the Pikes Peak region, now Colorado; in 1861 returned to Pennsylvania and enlisted on July 9, 1863 in Co. “G”, 47th Penn. Vols.; mustered out Aug. 14, 1863. He had been Constable of the township of Ararat for two years, Assessor for two years, town clerk and justice of the peace.

Album has brown leather cover with embossed design on the front and back. Leather is in good condition, with some wear all over, but especially on the spine, edges and corners. Spine is torn at the top of the back cover. Spine is embossed in gold with, “ALBUM”.

Album has a printed lining on inside of front and back covers. Binding has completely separated from pages. All pages are present. There is a title page labeled, “ALBUM FOR PHOTOGRAPHS” and index pages with names filled in on the numbered lines. The edges of the pages are gold gilt which has retained its brightness. The album closes with two decorative gold colored metal clasps which are still firmly attached.

Album contains 45 images. There is space for 50 images. There are a variety of men, women and children. Men are in civilian attire. These images are of individuals, couples and families. Backmarks checked were from Pennsylvania and New York. Images are Civil War- era and post war.

Measures approx. 5” x 6 ¼” x 3 ¼”.

This is a great album for a collector of civilian images.
