Here is a unique opportunity to have a nice cavalry soldier image as well as his family albums. CDV is a bust view of George W. Lukens of the 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry. He is wearing a dark colored sack coat with shoulder boards. His cheeks and lips have been tinted pink by the photographer. Image is very clear with god contrast. Backmark reads, “PHOTOGRAPHED BY B.F. REIMER, NO. 624 ARCH STREET PHILA. NO. 7350”.

George W. Lukens enlisted on 8/22/1862 as a Private and was mustered into Co. “C”, 15th PA Cavalry. He was promoted to Comm. Sergeant on 3/1/1863. Intra Regimental Company Transfers: he mustered into "H" Co. PA 15th Cavalry. He was mustered out on 6/21/1865 at Nashville, TN.

Two photograph albums accompany the image of Lukens. Large album has brown leather cover with embossed gold gilt design on the front and back. Cover is in fair condition, with wear all over, especially on the spine, edges and corners. Cover on spine is torn, which has made the front and back boards loose. Album has a printed vellum lining on inside of front and back covers. All pages are present and intact. There is a title page labeled, “THE PHOTOGRAPHIC ALBUM. PHILADELPHIA, J.B. LIPPINCOTT & CO.” and an index page with no writing. The edges of the pages are gold gilt which has retained its brightness. The album closes with two decorative gold colored metal clasps which are still firmly attached. Album contains 40 images. Many have names inscribed by photos. There is space for 100 images. There are a variety of men, women and many children. Images of Lukens’ parents, Abel and Naomi, are present. Backmarks checked were from the Philadelphia area. Measures 6” x 91/4” x 3”.

Smaller album has brown leather cover with embossed design on the front and back. Cover is in fair condition, with wear all over, especially on the spine, edges and corners. Cover has split on the spine making the back board loose. Album has a printed vellum lining on inside of front and back covers. All pages are present and intact. The edges of the pages are gold gilt which has retained its brightness. The album closes with two decorative gold colored clasps which are still firmly attached. Album contains 39 images. Many have names inscribed by photos. There is space for 40 images. There are a variety of men, women and children. Men are in civilian clothing. One gem sized image is labeled as George W. Lukens. Backmarks checked are from the Philadelphia area. Measures 4” x 5 ½” x 2”.

This is a great grouping for a collector of Civil War era civilian and military images. Soldier history and grave records are included. Would be an interesting project to further research the other names of the Lukens family.  [sl]
