Measures 3.5 by 4.75”, against white card backing. Reverse pencil marks: “L. Hallen / photographer / In camp at fortress Monroe Virginia / During Spanish American War 1898 / Harry A. Mitchell/ ____[?].”
This image depicts a Span-Am young soldier in full kit, posed before a pup tent w/board flooring. Wearing campaign hat, five button sack coat & leggings—carrying knapsack, canteen & coffee cup, haversack and bayonet—holding trapdoor rifle with fixed bayonet. Striped army blanket is visible on pup tent cot to the rear. Tent is stenciled “___Land/ NC”.
Image background exhibits lights soiling & spotting while center portion featuring the standing soldier remains clear, with good detail. Fortress Monroe was used as a hospital base for sick soldiers returning from Cuba. Fine representative shot of typical Span-Am paraded with full kit in a camp setting. Invites further research.
