Bust view wearing Veteran Reserve Corps uniform. Printed at the bottom of the image is “GEO. S. HEATON, Co. A.” Period ink on reverse: “Geo. S. Heaton / Co. A / Keene N.H.”. No photographer’s mark.
Overall very good condition. Minor scattered wear and staining to edges of mount, small tear in bottom edge of mount extending upward into the “T” of “HEATON”.
Born in Keene, NH, Heaton (with middle initial listed as both “S” and “A”) was a 20 year old resident of that town when he enlisted as a Private on 5/22/61. On 5/31/61 he mustered into Co. A, 2nd NH Infantry. Listed as a POW at Bull Run (lay on field for 9 days). Confined at Richmond 7/23/61 (estimate day, exchanged). Paroled 1/17/62 (place not stated). Discharged for disability on 8/5/62 at Concord, NH. On 12/11/63 he mustered into Co. F, 13th Veteran Reserve Corps. Discharged on 11/28/64. Died on 2/21/1906 at Portsmouth, NH, and buried in Washington Cemetery in Keene.[ld]
