Bust view wearing civilian clothing. Printed on a label attached at the bottom of the image is “JOHN H. WILLEY, Co. E.” Period ink inscription on reverse: “John H. Willey / Co. E, 2ed N.H.V. / Worcester Mass / Died Jan 26^th 1870 / Age 29.” No BM.

Overall good condition. Scattered wear to edges of mount; minor staining to label with name.

Willey was a 21 year old resident of Salem, NH when he enlisted on 4/24/61 as a Private. On 5/4/61 he was mustered into Co. H, 1^st NH Infantry. Mustered out on 8/9/61 at Concord, NH. On 9/17/61 he mustered into Co. E, 2^nd NH Infantry. Discharged on 8/28/64 near Petersburg, VA. He lived in Salem, NH after the war. The handwritten date of death on the back of the image is incorrect; Willey actually died in California 1907 and is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Manchester, NH.[ld]
