Front mark: “Hutchings…Rail-Road/ Photo-Car” This 4.125 x 6.5” image dates from the 1890s and is an image of Chapman taken at Corinth, MS, in 1863. Reverse ink inscription: “Compliments of J. F. Chapman/ late Maj of the 122nd Ill. Vol Infantry/ Taken at Corinth in 1863.” Image projects a frontal bust portrait of a bearded Chapman in uniform frock coat. Image clear and clean.

James F. Chapman was a resident of Staunton, IL, who enlisted and was commissioned staff Major of the 122nd ILL. Infantry, 9/4/1862. He was mustered out at Mobile, AL, 7/15/1865. His unit, the 122nd Illinois served in the western theater, principally in Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama, & Mississippi. It was engaged in operations against Nathan Bedford Forrest’s Cavalry and in the pursuit of Price through Missouri in the fall of 1864. It was present at the Battle of Nashville and engaged in the pursuit of Hood’s defeated Army. It assisted in the Siege of Spanish Fort and the capture of Mobile, AL, where it was mustered out, 7/15/1865. During service it lost 40 men killed and wounded and 121 by disease for a total of 161.
