Moses Parker Rice (1839-1925) seems to have worked as an assistant for Alexander Gardner. He is sometimes credited as the cameraman for Lincoln’s last sitting with Gardner in February 1865. He later opened a photographic studio of his own in Washington and by the 1890s he had a number of Brady and Gardner negatives from which he issued prints such as the views of Lincoln and Grant offered here, which bear his 1891 copyright and were likely meant to take advantage of the surge in popular interest in war on the twenty-fifth anniversary of its conclusion. Interestingly, when Rice first marketed these photos as from, “the only original unretouched negative,” he paired them as images supposed both to be taken in 1864 at the time of Lincoln’s appointment of Grant as lieutenant general. It is ironic that this image of Lincoln was actually taken in November 1863, shortly before his trip to deliver his address Gettysburg and, as cropped by Rice, has become the classic portrait of Lincoln, the one thought to best at capture his character, and has become known as the “Gettysburg” portrait, despite Rice’s very different marketing plan.

Beautifully matted and framed in a 24 ½” x 15 ¾” frame with conservation glass, these images have very good clarity and tone, and would look great on the wall of a collection room or as part of a Lincoln collection.  [sr]
