Image is an 1870’s / 80’s copy of a wartime bust view of Colonel Simeon Sammons of the 155th New York. The Colonel wears a dark double-breasted frock coat with shoulder straps.

Image has good clarity and contrast. Mount and paper have minor surface dirt from age and storage. Bottom center of the mount has a photographer’s mark for TAYLOR AND SON…AMSTERDAM, NEW YORK.

Reverse has photographer’s logo and advertisement. Top has “COL. SIMEON SAMMON, CO. H 115 REGT. N. Y. VOL. INF.” In period ink. The word “COL” is faint due to staining.

Simeon Sammons was born on May 23, 1811. In the years before the Civil War Sammons was a member of the New York Militia rising to the rank of colonel. He was also active in politics being a member of the Democratic and then the Know-Nothing Party.

Sammons was commissioned colonel of the 115th New York on August 27, 1862. He led the regiment at Harpers Ferry where it was captured during the Antietam Campaign. Sent to Chicago until exchanged, the regiment lost heavily at Olustee, Florida where Colonel Sammons was wounded. The 115th also took part in the actions at Chester’s Station, Drewry’s Bluff, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and the Crater where Sammons was wounded for a second time, Deep Bottom and Chaffin’s Farm.

Colonel Sammons was discharged for disability on November 19, 1864.

After the war Sammons was active in Democratic politics in New York as well as local politics and farming. He died on March 19, 1881 and is buried in Sammons Cemetery in Mohawk, New York.  [ad]
