Image shows an upright stone decorated with crossed swords, an Odd Fellows chain link, a 5th and 18th Corps badge and something that looks like a builder’s square Masonic symbol. Below the decoration the stone reads “GEO. T. PERKINS, M.D. SURGEON 5TH & 18TH ARMY CORPS.”

The card is clean and clear. Upper left corner of the mount is chipped but not the paper of the image.

Reverse of the mount has a very nice period ink inscription that reads:

“GEORGE T. PERKINS

BORN IN PLYMOUTH MASS. MARCH 12, 1838

DIED BOSTON, DEC. 7, 1880

22ND, 32ND AND 26TH MASS REGT. 1861-1865

ENGAGED IN 23 BATTLES

WOUNDED AT THE BATTLE OF GAINES’ MILLS, VA. JUNE 26, 1862

TAKEN PRISONER AT SAVAGE STATION JUNE 29, 1862”

Dr. Perkins served through most of the war with the 22nd Massachusetts having enlisted as a Hospital Steward on October 12, 1861. He was wounded and captured at Gaines’ Mill on June 27, 1862 and was paroled the following August 1st.

Perkins was promoted to Assistant Surgeon on February 20, 1863 and served in that position with the 22nd Massachusetts until he was mustered out on October 17, 1864.

Next, Perkins was commissioned as Assistant Surgeon in the 32nd Massachusetts on November 21, 1864, was made Surgeon on December 21, 1864 and mustered out on January 17, 1865.

On January 23, 1865 he was appointed Surgeon of the 26th Massachusetts and served with them until mustered out at Savannah, Georgia on August 26, 1865.
