Image shows the National colors of the 82nd Pennsylvania Infantry which served in the eastern theater of war with the 4th and 6th Corps.
The colors are displayed on the staff with the latter going diagonally across the image. The spear shaped finial is visible at top and close observation reveals that the staff runs through a sleeve on the hoist end of the color. Also present are the two tassels just below the finial.
The flag is spread out and draped over a balustrade to reveal battle and wind damage such as tears and missing material. Almost the entire canton is gone. There are no visible markings on the flag.
Image is clear with good contrast. Mount edges are clean.
Reverse has no photographer’s mark but there is also some collector information in pencil.
The 82nd Pennsylvania was organized on August 1, 1861 for three years. The regiment saw action at Fair Oaks, Savage’s Station, Malvern Hill, Chancellorsville, Marye’s Heights, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Winchester, Petersburg, High Bridge and Sailor’s Creek.
During its service the regiment lost approx. 16 officers and 173 men killed, died of wounds or disease with another 156 wounded and captured.
The regiment was mustered out on July 13, 1865.
