Place enlisted at the age of 31 on 8/22/61 at New York City as a Captain. On 10/10/61 he was commissioned into Co. C, 1st New York Engineers. Promoted to Major 1/1/63 and Lt. Col. 5/1/65. Mustered out on 6/30/65 at Richmond, VA.
