Full standing view of James F. Riddell leaning on a balustrade with one leg crossed in front of the other and one arm on his hip. He wears a forage cap, dark frock coat with piping on collar and cuffs, light shirt with a dark bow tie and light trousers. Image is clear and the contrast is excellent. Image is clean except for a small area of foxing in the upper right area. Mount has some discoloration on lower right corner but nothing major. Reverse has very light period pencil ID on back along with collector information. There are also 7 or 8 scattered old ink stains. Photographers imprint is “C. L. HOWE…BRATTLEBOROH, VT.”
James French Riddell was born in Amherst in 1841. He was living in Bedford when he enlisted as a Private in Co. C, 11th New Hampshire on August 21, 1862. He was wounded in action at Fredericksburg on December 13, 1862 and was discharged for disability on April 15, 1864 at Camp Dennison, Ohio. After the war he lived in Fall River, Massachusetts where he was active in Richard Borden Post #46 of the GAR. He died in Fall River on November 17, 1895 and is buried there in Oak Grove Cemetery.
