Image shows Sergeant Frederick Deane of The Chicago Board of Trade Battery posed by a podium or low table. He wears a kepi with small crossed cannons on the front, a light double-breasted jacket with a turned down collar, a breast pocket and two lower pockets, one on each side of the jacket and dark trousers. Deane stands with his right hand thrust in one of the lower pockets of the jacket. The jacket is definitely of commercial production and is being worn over a sack coat. The image is clear with great contrast. There is some light surface dirt from age, mostly on the lower mount.

The reverse has a blurry period ink inscription that reads “FRED DEAN CHICAGO BOARD TRADE BATTERY-FORMERLY ????”.

Frederick G. Deane resided in Chicago when he enlisted as a Private in The Chicago Board of Trade Battery on August 1, 1862. At some point he was promoted to Sergeant. While he was with the battery it saw action at Lawrenceburg, Stone’s River, Ringgold and Chickamauga. On September30, 1864 Deane was discharged for promotion to 2nd Lieutenant in the 13th Michigan Independent Battery. While with this battery Deane served in the Defenses of Washington and rose to the rank of 1st Lieutenant before being discharged on June 5, 1865. Dean is carried on the record of the 13th Michigan Battery as Frederick J. Deane.
