CDV OF MARY LINCOLN IN MOURNING

Item Code: 198-711

This CDV shows First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln in mourning for her son Willie.

Mrs. Lincoln is posed seated with her hands in her lap and dressed from head to toe in black. She wears a solid black dress and bonnet. The bonnet has a black silk bow tied under her chin and is adorned at top with dark flowers as well as some white flowers. There also appears to be a black vail attached to the bonnet.

Mrs. Lincoln sat for this image in 1862 while she was in mourning for her son Willie who died in the White House on February 20 of that year. Sadly grief and mourning clothes were almost constant companions for Mrs. Lincoln. She lost a son named Eddie, at age 4 in 1850, son Willie at age 11 in 1862, her husband was murdered at her side and her youngest son Tad died at age 18 in 1871.

The image is clean and clear with clipped corners. There is no photographer’s back mark.

This is a nice clean image of a lady who saw more than her share of grief during her lifetime.
