This CDV image shows Henry DeCrauzat as a Captain in the 98th Pennsylvania Volunteers. He is posed with his left hand resting on his sword and the other by his side. He stands between a low table and chair.

DeCrauzat is shown wearing a dark nine button frock coat with Captain’s shoulder straps and matching dark trousers. The third button of the frock coat is undone with a white handkerchief shoved into the gap. At his waist he wears a sword belt with rectangular eagle plate. Attached to the belt is his Model 1850 Foot Officer’s sword. In his right hand he holds his forage cap with an infantry insignia on the front with the number “98” at center.

Image is clear with good contrast but the paper and mount have light to moderate surface dirt. Corners show wear. On the image, above the Captain’s head, is a late 19th or early 20th Century ink inscription that reads “CIVIL WAR CAPTAIN’S UNIFORM.” The bottom edge of the mount has a period pencil inscription that reads “HENRY DE CRAUZAT / COMP. D” then in ink similar to that at the top of the card is “CAPT / 1862.” This area also has the photographer’s imprint of “BRADY / WASHINGTON.”

Reverse of the image is blank but does have a period pencil inscription that reads “HENRY DE CRAUZAT / CAPT COMP D 98th P VOLS / CAMP TENNALLYTOWN / MARCH 8th 1862.”

Henry DeCrauzat was living in Philadelphia when he enlisted as 1st Sergeant in Company I, 21st Pennsylvania Infantry on April 29, 1861. The regiment was assigned to General Patterson’s army and spent its time along the Potomac and engaged the Confederates in several skirmishes before being mustered out at Philadelphia on August 9, 1861.

DeCrauzat was then commissioned as Captain of Company D, 98th Pennsylvania on August 29, 1861. His regiment was assigned to the Army of the Potomac with whom it took part in the Peninsula Campaign being engaged at Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Gaines’ Mill and Malvern Hill. The regiment played a small part in the 2nd Bull Run campaign and was not engaged.

It was at the start of the Antietam Campaign on September 9, 1862 that Captain DeCrauzat tendered his resignation which was accepted.

Nothing is known about the Captain’s post-war life.
