This CDV is a vignette bust view of Private Edward W. Hopkins in civilian clothes. He wears a dark suit with a white shirt and sports rather long sideburns. The image is clean with good contrast and only light surface dirt.
The reverse has a period pencil inscription along the top edge that reads “E.W. HOPKINS.” There is also a photographer’s imprint for S. O. HERSEY… MONTPELIER, VERMONT.
Edward Wright Hopkins was born in Peacham, Vermont on April 6, 1842. He enlisted as a Private in Company G, 11th Vermont at St. Johnsbury on August 12, 1863. The 11th later became the 1st Vermont Heavy Artillery. While Hopkins was with the regiment it saw action at Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. During the siege of the latter place Private Hopkins was wounded at Weldon Railroad on June 23, 1864. The wound was in the left arm and was severe enough to cause the arm to be amputated. Hopkins was discharged due to wounds on September 25, 1865.
He died on April 3, 1893 and is buried in Village Cemetery, Essex, Vermont.
