Nice clean, clear bust view of Private Zacheus Blood wearing a dark civilian suit jacket, light vest and white shirt with bow-tie. The image is in a ornate frame printed onto the CDV mount. Image has excellent contrast.
Reverse top edge has a period pencil inscription that reads “ZACHEUS BLOOD, CO. C, 4TH VT. INFANTRY.”
Zacheus Blood from Cavendish, Vermont enlisted for 9 months as a Private in Company C, 16th Vermont Infantry on August 29, 1862 and was mustered in on October 23rd of that same year. During his time of service the regiment saw action at Gettysburg. Private Blood was mustered out at Brattleboro, Vermont on August 10, 1863.
Blood enlisted for a second time for three years as a Private in Company C, 4th Vermont Infantry on December 3, 1863 and was mustered in on Christmas Day. While he was with the 4th it saw action in the Wilderness and at Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and Monocacy. During the battle of Opequan also known as 3rd Winchester on September 19, 1864 Private Blood was killed in action. At the time of his death he was 22 years old. A cenotaph to him stands in Proctor Cemetery, Cavendish, Vermont.
