Bust view of Edgar W. Dennis wearing a double-breasted frock coat with Colonels shoulder straps. Image and mount are clean and clear with good contrast. Reverse has photographers imprint of “HENRY ULKE…WASHINGTON D.C. 1866.” There is also a green tax stamp on the reverse as well. Image is ID by a copy of another image signed by Dennis. This copy comes with the photo.
Edgar Whetten Dennis was born in New York. He enlisted as a Private in Battery H, 4th New York Heavy Artillery on December 27, 1861. He was appointed 1st Lieutenant on February 20, 1862 and assigned as an Aide-De Camp. Dennis was promoted to Captain on July 11, 1862. He served as a Judge Advocate in King’s Division till December of 1863 when he was assigned to the Judge Advocate office in Washington, D.C. He was promoted Major on January 19, 1865 and Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel on December 2, 1865 for faithful and meritorious service during the war. Dennis resigned from the Army in 1869.

This sword was probably sold by Schuyler, Hartley & Graham of New York. The pattern is pictured in their 1864 catalogue in figures 13 and 16. Rather than have a standard blade, the lightly curved 32 inch blade has "B.K." (Battery K) on the left… (870-447). Learn More »
