CDV is a chest-up view of a Union soldier in uniform named James H. Philapy. He is wearing a dark uniform jacket with a dark felt collar and light colored cravat.  Bottom of mount is marked with a hand written inscription that reads, “YOURS TRULY, J. H. PLILAPY, CAPT. CO. “H”, 1ST MD CAV”.

Reverse of image is stamped with the photographer’s imprint, “ISRAEL & CO. PHOTOGRAPHERS, 125 BALTIMORE STREET, BALTIMORE”. There is a green tax stamp that has been initialed and marked with a “65” over it for the year.

Image is clear with good contrast. Some light surface dirt is present on edges.

James H. Philapy enlisted on December 3, 1861 as a Private in Co. “H”, 1st MD Cavalry. He was promoted to a 1st Lieut. on August 28, 1863, and as a Captain on November 1, 1864. He mustered out on August 8, 1865.
