CDV is a three-quarter view of a Union soldier in uniform named Jacob Henry Counselman.  He is wearing a dark colored, double breasted frock coat.

Reverse of image is stamped with the photographer’s imprint, “ISRAEL & CO., PHOTOGRAPHERS, 125 BALTIMORE STREET, BALTIMORE”.  Also on the reverse is the handwritten inscription, “J. H. COUNSELMAN, LIEUT. COL. U. S. A.”.

Image is clear with good contrast. Some light surface dirt is present on edges.

Jacob Henry Counselman was born in Maryland and graduated from the USMA in 1863. He enlisted on June 11, 1863 as a 2nd Lieutenant into US Army Battery K, 1st Light Artillery. He was promoted to a 1st Lieutenant on August 1, 1863 by Brevet for Brandy Station, Virginia.  He was discharged for promotion to Lieutenant Colonel on April 20, 1864 and commissioned into Field & Staff of the 1st Maryland Cavalry.  He was promoted to Captain by Brevet on August 14, 1864 for Deep Bottom, Virginia. He was promoted to Major on March 13, 1865 by Brevet and then to Lieutenant Colonel on March 13, 1865. He was mustered out on August 8, 1865, but then continued to serve in the US Army until his death on February 21, 1875. He died in Baltimore and is buried in Arlington Cemetery.
