Robert McAllister (1813-1891), was a Civil War Union Brevet Major General. He served as Lieutenant Colonel of the 1st New Jersey Volunteer Infantry before assuming the colonelcy of the 11th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry in August 1862. In continuous command of his unit from 1862 to Gettysburg, participating in the Battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 2, 1863), while his regiment was resisting the Confederate attacks on the Peach Orchard, he issued orders for his regiment to lay down and fire by ranks while he was severely wounded and had been carried off of the field. After a four-month convalescence, he returned to his unit and was given command of his brigade. He never relinquished brigade command after that, and was repeatedly commended for his leadership in the subsequent Battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania and the Petersburg Campaign. At the Battle of Boynton Plank Road (October 17, 1864), his stout defense and bravery earned him the brevet of Brigadier General, US Volunteers. When the war came to its conclusion, Colonel McAllister was present at Appomattox. He received another brevet promotion, this time to Major General, US Volunteers, on March 25, 1865 in recognition of his four years of service.
