Lithograph is a chest-up view of Mulligan in uniform. Bottom of mount is marked, “COL. MULLIGAN, J.H. BUFFORD, BOSTON”. Image is clear with good contrast. Light surface dirt is present.
Letter cover has a lithograph of Mulligan on left side and the wording, “PUB. BY J.J. KEARNEY, 167 CLARK ST, CHICAGO, COL. JAS. A. MULLIGAN, THE GALLANT DEFENDER OF LEXINGTON, MO.”. It is hand inscribed in period ink, “FOR UNCLE ELLY”.
James A. Mulligan (1830-1864), was a Brigadier General of volunteers in the Union Army. An Irish politician in Chicago, he raised the “Irish Brigade” (23rd Illinois). He was wounded at Winchester and as his men were carrying him from the field he ordered them to save the flag rather than to save him. He was captured and died three days later. [sm]
