This image came from an envelope where it was stored with other images over the years. The plain white envelope is marked on the front in pen & ink, “Photographs of Civil War / Cols Thompson & Potter / Surgeon John Bowen / & / Father J. B. Potter”. A photocopy of the envelope is enclosed. The Potter [450-147] & Bowen [450-145] images from this envelope are listed separately.
The CDV is of Richard S. Thompson who served in the 12th New Jersey Infantry. The image is a bust view in uniform. Back features pen & ink ID, revenue stamp, and Gutekunst-Philadelphia photographer’s backmark. Nice clean image, corners of mount trimmed slightly.
Thompson enlisted on 8/14/1862 as a captain; discharged for wounds 2/17/1865. Rose through ranks to Lt. Colonel. Led a charge on the Bliss Farm at Gettysburg. Wounded at Reams’ Station.
Nice image from a desirable Civil War regiment. [jet]
