CDV OF JEFFERSON DAVIS FLEEING

$35.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 344-2705

CDV is a humorous cartoon caricature of the capture of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Cartoons such as this ran in Northern newspapers based on the false rumor that Davis was captured wearing women’s clothes. He was, in fact, wearing his wife’s shawl for warmth, as he had taken ill over the past few days since fleeing Richmond. This image shows Davis wearing a dress and bonnet, holding a knife while he is running.

Bottom of mount is titled, “THE CLOTHES CHASE OF THE CONFRDERACY”.

Reverse has no imprint.

Image is clear and the contrast is good. Surface has some light dirt from age.    [SM]
