Image is clear with good contrast and light scattered surface dirt throughout.

Reverse has photographer’s imprint for DAVIS BROTHERS….PORTSMOUTH, N.H. There is also some early 20th century ink stamped information that reads “5 COPY/ SOURCE UNKNOWN / SEP 16, 1957.” Let there be no confusion from this stamping. This is an original Civil War period image.

This photo is used as an illustration on page 256 of “THE CIVIL WAR UNIFORMS OF THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS: THE REGULATIONS OF 1859” by Cureton and Sullivan.

James Lewis was born June 2, 1832 in Pennsylvania. He was the son of Ellis Lewis who was a Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania State Supreme Court. Young James studied law for a while before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps.

Lewis was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant to rank from 25 September 1855, 1st Lieutenant from 6 May 1861, Captain on 26 July 1861 and Major 13 October 1869. He resigned on 11 January 1876.

During his service Lewis was assigned to the following stations;

Marine Barracks, Philadelphia 1856, USS WABASH of the Home Squadron 1856-1858, Marine Barracks, Brooklyn, N.Y. 1859, the frigate ST. LAWRENCE of the Atlantic Blockading Squadron 1861, the USS WABASH which was the flagship of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron 1862-1863, Marine Barracks, Philadelphia 1864-1866, Marine Barracks Portsmouth, New Hampshire 1868-1869 and finally Marine Barracks, Norfolk, VA.

Major Lewis died in Philadelphia on February 11, 1876 and is buried there in Woodlands Cemetery.

His obituary says “He was a man whose many qualities endeared him to all whom he came in contact, and his death will be regretted by a large circle of friends.”    [ad]
