Sharp clear bust view CDV of Ira Gove in the dark frock coat of a Union 1st Lieutenant. The image is clear and crisp with a wonderful period ink inscription at bottom that reads “IRA S. M. GOVE / 1st LT. 17th REGT. N.H. V.”

Image has some light surface dirt as well as four tiny tack holes near the top and bottom edges. There is also some light surface dirt.

Reverse has collector information in pencil. There is no photographer’s back mark.

Ira Shepherd Montgomery Gove was born in Whitefield, New Hampshire May 29, 1824. He was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant in the Field and Staff of the 17th New Hampshire Infantry on November 11, 1862. At the time he was 38 years old. Unfortunately some of the enlisted men slated for the 17th were taken to fill out the 15th and 16th Regiments. The small amount that were left were sent to the 2nd New Hampshire and the commissioned officers of the 17th were mustered out. Gove left the army on April 16, 1863.

He died in Whitefield on March 24, 1894.  [ad]
