Ira Shepherd Montgomery Gove was born in Whitefield, New Hampshire May 29, 1824. He was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant in the Field and Staff of the 17th New Hampshire Infantry on November 11, 1862. At the time he was 38 years old. Unfortunately some of the enlisted men slated for the 17th were taken to fill out the 15th and 16th Regiments. The small amount that were left were sent to the 2nd New Hampshire and the commissioned officers of the 17th were mustered out. Gove left the army on April 16, 1863.

He died in Whitefield on March 24, 1894.  [ad]
