General Crawford was one of the most noted of Pennsylvania Civil War soldiers. After commanding a battery through the bombardment of Ft. Sumter, Crawford vacated a regular army staff position by becoming major of the newly authorized 13th Infantry. Promoted to Brigadier General of Volunteers, Crawford was praised for services during the 1862 Shenandoah Campaign. He commanded a Brigade at Cedar Mountain and a division at Antietam, where he was severely wounded. In May, 1863 he was assigned command the Pennsylvania Reserve Corps and led them with great distinction at Gettysburg, and was later brevetted for gallantry in the Battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Five Forks , and the Siege of Petersburg. Crawford remained in the army following the war, attaining regular Brigadier rank at his retirement in 1873. A memorial statue to Crawford and his Pennsylvania Reserves was placed in Gettysburg in 1988, where it can be seen from the Wheatfield Road in Little Round Top’s “Valley of Death.” Scarce Crawford CDV, excellent collectible.
