This group of three CDVs are of Sergeant Stephen G. Luther who served in three different Rhode Island regiments.

The first image in the group is a bust view of Luther in uniform. Image is clear and clean but there is a slight crease running across the bottom portion of the image. The reverse on this first image has a J. A. WILLIAMS…NEWPORT, R.I. back mark with a very nice period ink inscription that reads “RESPECTFULLY YOURS STEPHEN G. LUTHER, PORTSMOUTH GROVE, R. I.” There is also some collector information in pencil.

The second image in the group is a nice nearly full length view of Luther seated by a table wearing a dark civilian suit. This image is clear and clean with good contrast. Reverse has a photographer’s mark of S. B. BROWN… PROV. R.I. There is also a light pencil inscription that reads S.G.L. TO ADDIE.” This image also has some collector information in pencil.

The third and last image in the group is a bust view of Luther wearing the same dark civilian suit he is wearing in the above described photograph. This image was taken by the same photographer probably at the same time as the one above. This image has some light surface dirt.

Stephen Gano Luther was born October 24, 1837. He was living in Providence when he enlisted as a Private in Battery F, 1st Rhode Island Light Artillery on October 14, 1861.

The battery was assigned to General Ambrose Burnsides North Carolina Expedition. The battery eventually ended up on Roanoke Island in March where Luther became ill. He was discharged for disability at New Berne, N.C. on March 27, 1862.

Two months later on May 26, 1862 Luther enlisted again, this time as a Sergeant in the 10th Rhode Island Light Artillery for three months. The regiment was also known as Company L, 10th Rhode Island Infantry. The battery served in the Maryland and northern Virginia areas but was never engaged with the enemy. Luther along with the rest of his comrades was mustered out on August 30, 1862.

Luther enlisted a third time as a Sergeant in Company A of the Rhode Island Hospital Guards. He spent the rest of the war doing guard duty and insuring that order was kept in the large hospital located in Portsmouth Grove, Rhode Island. Luther was mustered out for the last time on August 26, 1865.

Sadly Luther died on January 23, 1866 at the age of 29. He was buried in North Burial Ground, Providence, Rhode Island.  [ad]
