Bust image of Samuel B. Roney in the uniform of a Lieutenant in the Union Army.

Image is clear with excellent contrast and is mostly clean. Bottom of mount has bold period ink signature “TRULY YOURS S. B. RONEY.”

Reverse has collector information in pencil at top and a back mark for CHARLES G. CRANE of Philadelphia.

Born in Pennsylvania Roney enlisted as a Private in Company H, 19th Pennsylvania Infantry for three months service on May 18, 1861 and was mustered out on August 29, 1861.

Roney was next commissioned a 1st Lieutenant in Company B, of the 90th Pennsylvania Infantry on March 12, 1862. He was made Quartermaster on September 6, 1862 and was discharged for promotion not long after the battle of Gettysburg.

On July 18, 1863 Roney was promoted to Captain in the Quartermaster’s Department where he remained until mustered out on December 13, 1865.

The 90th Pennsylvania was engaged at 2nd Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Mine Run, Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Petersburg. The regiment lost 6 officers and 224 enlisted men killed, died of wounds and disease as well as many more wounded.

Roney’s name appears on the Pennsylvania Monument at Gettysburg showing that he was present for that engagement. He died in Philadelphia on September 6, 1901.    [ad]
