This bust view shows William McKinnon in civilian clothes. He is wearing a dark winter coat with a black velvet or fur collar. Attached to his left breast just below the jacket lapel is what appears to be a mourning rosette. Image is clean and clear with great contrast.

Reverse has photographer’s imprint for POWELSON…ROCHESTER, NEW YORK. Just below the imprint in a very fine hand is “LIEUT. WM. R. McKINNON, N.Y.V.”

William R. McKinnon was 23 years old when he enlisted as a Private in Company A, 13th New York Infantry on April 25, 1861 and was mustered in the following May 14th.

The regiment served at 1st Bull Run where it lost 6 killed, 12 wounded and 26 captured. It was later assigned to the 3rd Corps of the Army of the Potomac and saw action at Yorktown. On May 5, 1862 McKinnon was promoted to Sergeant. As his service continued the regiment was engaged at Hanover Court House, Gaines Mill, Savage Station, 2nd Bull Run, Antietam and Shepherdstown. On November 11, 1862 McKinnon was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant and transferred to Company F of the 13th.  While in this position he saw action at Fredericksburg, the Mud March and Chancellorsville. McKinnon was mustered out with his regiment at Rochester, New York on May 13, 1863.

On May 5, 1865 McKinnon was commissioned a Captain in the 194th New York but the regiment was never mustered.

Nothing is known about McKinnon later in life other than he was buried in Brick Church Cemetery in Spring Valley, New York.  [ad]
