William R. McKinnon was 23 years old when he enlisted as a Private in Company A, 13th New York Infantry on April 25, 1861 and was mustered in the following May 14th.

On November 11, 1862 McKinnon was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant and transferred to Company F of the 13th.  While in this position he saw action at Fredericksburg, the Mud March and Chancellorsville. McKinnon was mustered out with his regiment at Rochester, New York on May 13, 1863.

On May 5, 1865 McKinnon was commissioned a Captain in the 194th New York but the regiment was never mustered.
