Image is a vignette view of Jacob A. Swartz in civilian clothes. He wears a dark jacket and white shirt with a wild checkered vest. Bottom of the image is signed in strong period ink "YOURS TRULY J. A. SWARTZ.
Image is clear with good contrast. There is some light surface dirt here and there. Nothing major.
Reverse has a photographer's imprint for D. C. BURNITE & CO. HARRISBURG, PA. Top has some collector information but at bottom there is a period inscription that reads "J. A. SWARTZ CO. A 15 P.V.C. MY ORDERLY DURING WINTER OF 1863 TO 1864 IN EAST TENNESSEE."
Jacob A. Swartz was born in Pennsylvania in 1840.
He first enlisted as a Private in Company F, 25th Pennsylvania Infantry for three months on May 2, 1861. After service in Washington and Harper's Ferry Swartz was mustered out at Harrisburg on August 1, 1861.
Swartz next enlisted as a Private in Company D, 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry on August 22, 1862 and was later transferred to Company A. He was promoted to Corporal on March 16, 1865 and was mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee on June 21, 1865.
After the war Swartz moved to Iowa where he died in 1929. He is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Stuart, Iowa.
The 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry was organized in October of 1862 and was assigned to the Army of the Cumberland. The regiment saw action at Stones River, Mossy Creek and several smaller skirmishes.
During its service the regiment lost 128 officers and men killed, died of wounds and disease plus many others wounded. [ad]
