George J. French enlisted as a Private in Company B on August 22, 1862. He was promoted to Corporal on November 10, 1864 and at some point was transferred to Company I.
On April 18, 1865 Corporal French was on picket near Lincolnton, North Carolina when he was shot by a bushwhacker. He was carried back to camp and died shortly after. He was buried in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Cemetery in Lincolnton by his comrades with the ladies of the town supplying flowers.
A very nice image with a touching story. [ad]
