Image shows Henry Sayers in a dark commercial sack coat with a black felt collar and pocket on the left breast. Beneath it he wears a matching dark military vest.
Bottom of the mount is signed "YOURS TRULY HENRY C. SAYERS COMP. G. 15 PA. CAV."
Image has a heavy sepia tone to it which causes the contrast to be a bit light but overall the image is clear. Mount corners are clipped.
Reverse has photographer's imprint for MORSE'S GALLERY OF THE CUMBERLAND, NASHVILLE. Reverse also has a period ink negative number and another inscription that reads "HOME WAYNESBURG GREENE COUNTY PA.
Henry Clay Sayers was born November 21, 1840. He enlisted as a Private in the 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry on September 11, 1862. According to an online biography on findagrave.com he heard the first rebel gun fired at Antietam. Fought at the Battle of Stones River and Chickamauga and was in many skirmishes of the war 1861-1865.
After the war he married and raised 5 children and was an active business man in Waynesburg where he died on January 1, 1926. He is buried in Green Mount Cemetery, Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. [ad]

This musket is stamped “42. VA. REGT. PITTSYLVANIA” on the barrel, was later altered to percussion and then shortened for use in the civilian market. It is a scarce survivor from muskets delivered to Virginia by Jame Swan of Boston in January… (1000-241). Learn More »
